WHAT WE DO

Why on Earth do we volunteer to do THIS?!?

We are an enthusiatic group of volunteers (with a good sense of humour) who make it easy for groups to have "slapstick fundraisers" by volunteering for the hardest jobs to fill -- the targets!

Charities, school associations and community groups love “slapstick fundraisers” – games like dunk tanks, pie-in-the-face booths, or the green slime machine - as they are nearly always very profitable, they always draw a crowd, and they’re great fun for the participants.

The challenge for many groups is finding enough volunteers who are willing to get soaked in the dunk tank, take multiple pies to their face, or get covered in slime. Let’s face it – for most people, a big part of what makes these events funny is the reassuring fact that it’s happening to someone else, and not everyone is comfortable being the object of the joke!

Tom Clowncy & Friends are a group of volunteers who can help you solve this challenge; we’re happy to be the punchline of the joke and we’ve done literally hundreds of “slapstick fundraisers”! We're experienced, reliable, uninhibited and committed. (Some might think we should be committed!)

Depending on the venue and audience (ie: mostly children or mostly adults), we can volunteer either as clown characters, or we can match the theme of your event – whichever best suits the occasion! (Examples: At a party sponsored by the Ottawa Senators Foundation, we were dunked in Habs jerseys; a golf tournament promoted by a construction company saw us wearing yellow safety vests like we were on a road crew; and at a fundraiser with a superhero theme we went in the tank wearing masks and capes!)

HOW THIS ALL STARTED...

In 1993, Tom and a friend were asked if they'd be willing to be volunteer for a pie-in-the-face fundraiser being held at the finish line of the Zeller's Moonwalk for Cystic Fibrosis; an hour and half (and several dozen cream pies) later, they were being thanked profusely by the organizer. As it happened, everyone else that had been asked had said "no" (or worse, had said yes, but then no-showed the day of the event). Since Tom and his friend agreed that they'd had a blast doing it, there was an obvious question that needed to be asked: might other groups - charities, community associations, etc. - have similar challenges getting volunteers for these kinds of events?

Research followed. Offices were visited. Phone calls were made. And, more often than not, the answer was "Yes." They realized that here was a unique opportunity to help others - if organizers of these kinds of events had such a hard time getting people to volunteer for something that he had so much fun doing, why not proactively offer themselves to these organizations for their fundraisers? And so Tom Clowncy was born (although he wasn't called that until 2006).

Since then, he's done over 200 dunk tank events and dozens of pie-tosses. Along the way, he's picked up a merry (and ever-changing) band of sidekicks who have seen the fun that he has doing these events and have chosen to join in the laughter!
